Crescent City, CA - National Redwood Forest

I left Eugene, OR on Tuesday after giving the camper a thorough exterior washing. Trying not to look like the RV in 'Breaking Bad'. Took yesterday in Crescent City, CA 6 hours south of Eugene,n to straighten up following the time with the boys. Plan on a couple of days checking out the redwood forest.  Toured the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park today.  It is both a California State Park (since the 20's) and a National Park (since 1968) - one of few parks with both appellations.

and back at the town.

Crescent City, a little seaside town with a lighthouse accessible by foot only at low tide.  I had to ask if the fog that enveloped the town this morning was fog or forest fire smoke (like in Montana).  Shoulda known - fog don't smell.

The drive through the trees in the redwood forest was one lane dirt, with pull-offs for opposing traffic to pass. I took a 1 mile footpath hike along the way, nearly surprising a couple of young lovers further up the trail - evenn redwoods don't make those sounds. Not all that excited to see old Grandpa Don!

Does this tree make my butt look small?
Held that pose for the timer's 10 seconds. Fortunately wasn't espied.

Truly majestic - The largest redwood in the forest is 379 feet tall and 24 feet in diameter.
They live as long as 2,000 years and have been around for more than 240 million years.

Tomorrow I'll drive through the Del Norte Coast Redwood State Park.

Worth putting a sticker on the camper.  My retired sense of 'plumb' may have deserted me. Note that California has been added to the map.

Meanwhile, I made a couple of shelves for the camper.  And will add a towel bar and paper towel holder tomorrow. Notice the bottle of fine Napa Valley Wine.  Yes, I have no clue about the vineyard, suspect it a discount blend, but fine with tonight's grilled T Bone and my suspect palate.

For a glass of milk during my typical 3:00 am awakening. That's my berth BTW, bed as nearly made as I can achieve.  Kathleen thanks immensely for that blanket!  50 degree nights.  The bunk above, in which Luke slept, is the same size at the beds we saw on the submarine in Portland. :)

One item of interest.  Diane and Josh's next door neighbors, Daniel and Evita, were both born and raised in Indio, CA where the Desert Trip concert will be held.  I've arranged to meet Daniel's father Larry the day and night before the concert, camp in front of his house, and see a part of the town with him.  I also have a care package to deliver to him that Daniel gave me.

Things are going well.  The little ants are back in the camper, so I must do what I can to eradicate their ilk.
Take care everyone.  Once again, thanks for caring to look me up!

  3. Good post Don, the vertical redwood photo was my favorite as well as the felled tree for the texture and fungi growth. Amazing trees.
If the opportunity for a hot air balloon ride around Napa arises I hope you decide to do it, very cool. The Shaffer's winery is small but renown for their vino. Peter grew up with them in Chicago, give them his best if you stop in. Grab us a bottle too, it will make a great host present & Oregon Butter for your sister;)
    Keep that Doggie Rollin'!
